The Case of Heather Bowles

Mr. Manicotti

In 1979, police in Port Gibson, Mississippi responded to an anonymous call about a possible hostage situation. Officers arrived at the remote location and found a large cinderblock building in the middle of the woods. There were no powerlines or roads leading to the building and aside from a large metal door, each side only had a single hazy window.

Upon breaking into the building, the police officers found themselves overcome with an intense feeling of dread. The building appeared uninhabited but with evidence of recent activity such as food strewn about the central room. When they arrived at a locked door, Officer Michael Harrison took this picture. They found a girl no older than 19 sitting in the room, smiling. When questioned, she didn't say a word but slowly turned her gaze from one officer to the next. After several minutes of this, she fixated on a young officer named Charles Leftwich and grinned at him.

The officers attempted to question her, but she continued to ignore them and simply stared at officer Leftwich without blinking. While being led out of the building, the girl suddenly lunged at officer Leftwich and tackled him. After a brief struggle, she effortlessly ripped his jaw off with her bare hands. She attempted to eat it before the rest of the officers restrained her and placed her in handcuffs.

She was taken to a top security psych ward and later identified as Heather Bowles, a girl who had gone missing five years prior. According to reports, Heather had been involved in a satanic cult before disappearing without a trace. Psychiatrists attempted to explain her behavior but this ultimately remained inconclusive. Unwilling to directly interact with her, Heather spent 6 weeks in total isolation. This entire time, prison guards reported that Heather didn't eat or drink a single thing. In fact, she didn't move from a seated position on the bed. She simply sat motionless and stared at whoever approached her cell, smiling.

On the 50th day of Heather’s tenure at the Asylum, a guard found her cell empty. The bars had been bent, a feat unimaginable for any human, let alone a 19-year-old, malnourished girl. Police searched for weeks, but with no luck. To this date, the case of Heather Bowles remains unsolved.
